My friends and interior design clients often ask me about the appropriate size of furniture (e.g. dining table) for their rooms. This is a good question as the size and scale are very important in interior design.

We all bought at some point a beautiful piece of furniture just to find out after it had arrived that it was too big or too small for the purpose or size of our room. This can be a costly and very annoying mistake!

Size and scale are crucial but there are also other things you should consider before you commit to buying and choosing the right place for your table.

Before you buy your dream table:

  • Consider how many people will use it on a daily and occasional basis. Keep in mind that your dining table is not just for dinners unless you live in a large house. Perhaps your kids will do their homework there? Or you work from home and have no other suitable space? Some tables have handy storage options (you could store your pens, notebooks and crayons in it).
  • Get a precise measurement of your room before you head to the shops. This means that you should write or draw on a piece of paper the length and width of your room and where your doorway, window and electrical sockets are. The location of the doorway is important to establish a good flow. If you work at your dining table you may need some additional light e.g. a reading lamp. That’s why the location of a window and sockets in relation to your table is important.
  • Allow at least 70cm for circulation around your dining table and chairs (ideally when chairs are pulled away from the table and not tucked in under the table).
  • If your place is tiny, leave enough space for your chairs to be comfortably pulled out when you try to sit on them.
  • If your room is small it’s a good idea to look for an extendable dining table, which will accommodate a few extra people when you need it.
  • Consider a round dining table if you have a small dining room. Not only does this maximise your small space, but it also allows for a more intimate dining experience.
  • If your room is square opt for a square table. the room will look more symmetrical and put together.
  • And, if your room is very large go big and go wild!
